  • Foster care is the temporary placement of children with families outside of their own home, usually due to abuse or neglect. The goal of foster care is to reunite children with their parents or extended family. 

  • When children can’t safely remain with their parents, county agencies typically first look to kin to provide care. “Kin” or “Kinship” are terms for family members or other adults that have a relationship with a child and/or family . 

  • Adoption is permanent. Children become eligible for adoption if their birth parents’ rights are terminated.
